The name Umm Al-Quwain is derived from Umm Al-Quwatain which means “mother of two powers”, the powerful seafaring tradition of the emirate.

Saddled between Ras Al-Khaimah and Ajman, it is a small land of only 750 sq. km. yet endowed with a natural beauty. Lush, coastal mangroves, sand dunes and inland oasis set its vivid view.

In 1775 Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, founder of the ruling Al Mualla lineage, established an independent sheikdom in Umm Al-Quwain from Sineyyah Island, when the sweet water supply dried up.

In 1820, Sheikh Abdullah I signed the General Maritime Treaty with the United Kingdom, thus accepting a British protectorate against the Ottoman Turks aggressors.  It joined the UAE in December 1971.

Umm Al-Quwain is also the emirate’s capital and brims with many private companies, abundant markets, several banks and the typical Ruler’s office.  Many new roads, buildings, parks and other amenities have been added to the growing structure to attract more tourism and strengthen the economy.

Sineyyah Island - A renowned sanctuary to deer, large bird species and native Al-Qaram trees. It also noted for its mangrove stamps, representing an extremely delicate and a fast-dwindling ecosystem.

Al Dur Island - A famous archaeological site where many remnants of its rich past were unearthed, like stone houses, tombs, glassware and large jars from other Arab lands. It also houses the remnants of a prominent settlement that dates back more than 2000 years.

Umm Al-Quwain Port - It houses many of the remnants found at the Al Dur archaeological site as well as an exceptional collection of weapons and an extravagant jewelry. Hanging on one of the tower walls is the history of the tower which includes stories of murder, betrayal and revenge.
